Challenge:

Design a new logo and album cover for Mariya’s reissued single “Plastic Love”

Market:

Mariya saw an upsurge in popularity when her 80’s hit “Plastic Love” went viral on YouTube.

A refresh of her logo and album cover was in order!

First, inspiration was gathered by researching Mariya’s life and inspiration. A number of iconic logos designs were referenced as well.

Mariya’s genre “City Pop,” although strictly Japanese in lyrics was musically influenced by American pop. Using the concept of American-Japanese fusion, I took the stripes idea of the American flag and was pleasantly surprised by what letter forms they can make when turned on their side. City Pop has hard-hitting drums and funky baselines. The kind of music that rocks the city. The “m” was then re-purposed as a row of 3 buildings, two of them rocking to the beat, one staying in place to maintain the “m” shape.

Typography

A script typeface for her name, similar to the original name typeface.

Color Palette

Matching the colors of her name and title on the original single to express the energy and liveliness of her music.

Finally, for the album cover, the background had the song title “Plastic Love” written and repeated to represent the song going viral. The song was top-of-mind for many people.
